Actually really, really nice

Listageddon

Was gonna do something quite bare bones but fuck it. Reckon this’ll be the last comprehensive rundown for a good while as I’ll probably have to be a bit more impartial in the new year & beyond so gonna spew in full. My most enjoyed whatevrs from 2k13.

Let’s Get Physical

Due to my line of summer work I ended up half-catching more amazing music than ever, but if I didn’t see it in full it doesn’t count. Tip o’ the hat to Jurassic 5, Ellen Allien, Karenn, James Blake and Andrés b2b Theo Parrish especially. Also excluding Joy/master who I caught 340582 times this year (approx.) and who were consistently, predictably, tediously megafun each time.

EOY: Real Deal

I almost definitely absorbed more in calendar year than ever before, but there remains a metric fucktonne of music I intended to hear but didn’t; much of it I had loaded onto my phone for a point, but just clean didn’t get round to (yet). Casualties include: some Opal Tapes and L.I.E.S material, a fair chunk of the R-Zone / CCCP releases, the majority of White Material’s output, pretty much all the Sex Tags Mania/Wania/UFO series, anything at all by Majical Cloudz (whoops), You’ve Never Been To KonotopVirgins (while awake), Gerd’s FACT Mix, Hysterics’ 20kg Mix, Oneohtrix’s probably work-of-art XLR8R Mix, 7 Days Of FunkThe Night’s GambitDrone Logic, Music For Shut Ins, 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, various Flaming Lips EPs and 12″s and gummy heads, loads of italo/cosmic disco compilations, super late drops by Clammy Clams & Bey, Air Texture Vol IIIKiki The WormholeGas remixing The Field (!!), 2/4 of Kool AD’s mixtapes, 2/2 MGUN EPs, The Inheritors, 1017 Thug, actually loads of ATL-hop & drill in general, plus all the new wave grime I was playing catch-up with seemingly the whole Autumn.

I look forward to listening to less music in 2014.

1. Deafheaven – Sunbather _ [Deathwish Inc.]
Perhaps when I look back at 2013 – fwiw a year I consider to be the weakest of the decade so far for truly stellar full-lengths (no shortage of great ones, mind) – I won’t see Deafheaven as blindingly essential. There might be others that rise in stature to become all-timers, as Real Estate and Clams Casino did from 2011’s mildly sub-par litter. But across the past 12 months, no other album brought the air-pounding, jaw-clenching, heart-swelling, purest of fucking F•E•E•L•I•N•G•S like this one.
